Celebrations Turn Violent in Paris After PSG Champions League Victory
Following the match, which took place in Budapest, thousands of supporters gathered along the Champs-Élysées to watch a public broadcast. Estimates suggest around 20,000 people were present, and celebrations intensified after PSG’s victory was confirmed.
However, the atmosphere quickly deteriorated as sections of the crowd engaged in vandalism and clashes with police. Reports indicate that scooters were set on fire, fireworks were directed toward law enforcement, and several confrontations broke out across central Paris.
Authorities responded with mass detentions. France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that 416 individuals were arrested, while at least one police officer sustained injuries during the disturbances.
Additional incidents were reported near the Parc des Princes stadium, where police carried out further arrests. Infrastructure damage was also recorded, including the burning of a kiosk near the Champs-Élysées and vandalism of a bus stop. According to local reporting, multiple vehicles and small businesses were affected by the unrest.
The victory marked a historic moment for PSG, as the club secured back-to-back European titles. It also placed them among a very small group of French teams to have won Europe’s top club competition, alongside Marseille’s 1993 triumph.
Despite the sporting achievement, celebrations were again overshadowed by disorder, echoing previous incidents linked to major PSG victories, which had also seen widespread arrests and, in earlier cases, fatalities during post-match unrest.
