Israeli Diplomat Ridicules France After UN Meeting Request on Lebanon

(MENAFN) A senior Israeli diplomat has criticized France following Paris’s decision to call for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council over Israel’s military actions in Lebanon.

The diplomatic exchange comes amid escalating tensions in southern Lebanon, where Israel has reportedly intensified air operations and expanded its ground presence in recent days despite claims of a ceasefire declared several weeks earlier. Reports indicate that Israeli forces advanced further into Lebanese territory and took control of strategic positions, including a historic Crusader-era fortress.

Israeli leadership has framed the military campaign as an expansion of operations against armed groups in the region, with officials stating that ground activity is being widened in scope.

In response to the French initiative at the United Nations, Israel’s political adviser to its UN mission, Waleed Gadban, publicly mocked Paris’s move on social media platform X. He shared footage of unrest in the French capital and accompanied it with the comment “Meanwhile in Paris,” implying that France should focus on domestic issues rather than international diplomacy.

France had requested the urgent Security Council session in light of what it described as worsening conditions in Lebanon. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot stated that “nothing can justify the continuation of Israeli military operations in Lebanon and its ever-deepening occupation of Lebanese territory.”

The French move reflects growing international concern over the escalation in southern Lebanon, where military activity has increased despite efforts to stabilize the situation.

The controversy also intersects with recent unrest in France itself, where celebrations following a major football victory by Paris Saint-Germain reportedly turned violent. Authorities arrested hundreds of people amid clashes, property damage, and injuries to both civilians and police officers during the disturbances.
