UK, France Strike Nearly USD900M Pact to Reduce Channel Migrant Crossings
According to reports, the deal—valued at about £662 million—will include expanded security measures along the French coastline, including the deployment of riot-trained police officers to patrol beaches and disrupt smuggling activity. Around 50 officers trained in crowd-control tactics are expected to be assigned to manage what authorities describe as potentially hostile situations involving migrants and smugglers.
The agreement also provides for increased surveillance capacity on the French side, including drones, helicopters, and advanced camera systems intended to detect and intercept human smuggling operations.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is scheduled to sign the three-year arrangement, which builds on ongoing cooperation between the two countries. She has stated that joint efforts with France have already prevented large numbers of attempted crossings, while stressing the need for further action to dismantle smuggling networks and deter dangerous sea journeys.
Despite these measures, crossings have continued at a significant rate. On a single recent Saturday, more than 600 people reportedly reached the UK via small boats, marking the highest daily total recorded so far this year.
Overall, more than 6,000 migrants have crossed the Channel in similar conditions since the beginning of the year. Last year, the total number of crossings reached 41,472, reflecting an increase of nearly 5,000 compared with the previous year, despite intensified enforcement efforts by UK authorities.
