France Reports Second Fatality After UN Peacekeeper Incident in Lebanon

(MENAFN) France has confirmed the death of a second soldier who was injured in an attack targeting the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon, according to reports.

President Emmanuel Macron announced the news, saying: “Anicet Girardin has died this morning as a result of his injuries. He died for France,” in a message posted on social media.

The soldier had been transferred to France for medical treatment after being wounded in the same incident that also killed Adjutant Florian Montorio and left two other French personnel injured.

Lebanon’s presidency said President Joseph Aoun was informed of the soldier’s death. The Lebanese leader reiterated his condemnation of the attack and extended condolences to France and the UNIFIL command.

He also stated that the fallen servicemen “joined, along with his comrade, a convoy of international forces’ martyrs who watered the land of the south with their blood, alongside a group of martyrs from the Lebanese army and other Lebanese security forces.”

According to France’s Ministry of Armed Forces, the patrol was attacked on April 18 in southern Lebanon during an incident involving an armed group operating in the area.

Investigations into the circumstances of the shooting are ongoing, as tensions remain high in the region.
