France Backs Defensive International Mission to Secure Vital Sea Route
French President Emmanuel Macron announced via the social media platform X that the proposed effort would focus on creating a “peaceful multinational mission” designed to protect key maritime routes. He emphasized that the operation would be strictly defensive in nature and would not involve direct participation from parties engaged in the ongoing conflict.
He also noted that the deployment would take place “as soon as circumstances permit,” suggesting that the timeline would depend on developments on the ground and diplomatic progress.
The initiative comes shortly after US President Donald Trump announced that a blockade on Iranian ports would come into effect at 1400 GMT, significantly increasing international concern over freedom of navigation in the Gulf region.
That announcement followed recent rare direct negotiations between Washington and Tehran held in Islamabad over the weekend, which were intended to end the conflict that began on February 28. However, those discussions reportedly ended without any agreement.
The planned conference is part of broader diplomatic efforts led by France and the UK to reduce tensions and encourage a political settlement to the escalating crisis in the Middle East.
Macron stressed that “no effort must be spared” in pursuing a lasting diplomatic resolution, calling for a framework that ensures security and stability for all regional actors.
He also highlighted that any long-term solution must address several core issues, including Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs, its regional activities, and the need to guarantee “free and unimpeded navigation” through the Strait of Hormuz.
