France Bars US Ambassador After Controversy Over Activist’s Death

(MENAFN) France has restricted US Ambassador Charles Kushner from direct access to government officials after he failed to appear at the Foreign Ministry to discuss American comments regarding the death of right-wing activist Quentin Deranque, according to reports.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot had summoned Kushner to the Quai d’Orsay following warnings from Washington about rising “violent radical leftism” in France. The ambassador did not attend, citing personal commitments, and sent an embassy official in his place. The ministry considered this a breach of protocol and ordered that Kushner be denied government access.

“In light of this apparent failure to grasp the basic requirements of the ambassadorial mission and the honor of representing one’s country, the minister [Barrot] has requested that he [Kushner] no longer be allowed direct access to members of the French government,” the statement said.

While the measure stops short of expulsion, it effectively makes Kushner persona non grata for senior-level contacts. He will be barred from meeting cabinet ministers and top officials, with communication restricted to lower-level channels. The restriction can be lifted if Kushner appears at the ministry, the statement added.

The diplomatic row follows the death of 23-year-old Quentin Deranque, a student and member of the nationalist group Audace Lyon, who died on February 14 from head injuries sustained in a brawl with alleged left-wing activists. His death has fueled outrage in France, intensifying political polarization ahead of local elections in March and the presidential vote next year, where polls show potential gains for the right-wing National Rally.
