Pavel Durov Accuses France of Suppressing Online Freedom

(MENAFN) Telegram founder and chief executive Pavel Durov asserted that France cannot be considered a free nation, contending that it stands alone in "criminally persecuting all social networks that give people some degree of freedom."

His remarks followed media reports that French law enforcement officers had carried out searches at the Paris headquarters of the social media platform X. Reacting on X, Durov declared: "Don’t be mistaken: this is not a free country."

Durov has previously taken aim at French authorities, accusing President Emmanuel Macron of attempting to stifle digital dissent by transforming the European Union into a "digital Gulag" (forced labor camps).

According to Durov, Macron has argued that Europeans are "completely wrong to use social networks for information" and should instead rely on journalists and long-established media organizations.

On Tuesday, French cybercrime police conducted a raid on X’s offices in Paris. The city’s prosecutor explained that the action is connected to a probe examining how the platform’s algorithm recommends content, as well as scrutiny of its artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.

The inquiry into X, which was broadened on Tuesday, centers on accusations of involvement in the circulation of child pornographic material and the spread of Holocaust denial content via Grok.

Meanwhile, Durov remains subject to judicial oversight in France following his arrest in 2024, although reports indicate that restrictions on his travel were lifted in November 2025.
