France’s National Assembly Approves Expenditure Portion of 2026 Budget
The first motion, brought forward by left-wing deputies, was defeated with 267 votes, falling short of the 289 required for passage, according to French broadcaster BFMTV. A second motion, proposed by the far-right National Rally (RN) party, also failed, receiving only 140 votes.
Last Friday, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu’s government had survived similar censure attempts regarding the revenue section of the budget. The Socialist Party, which welcomed certain concessions in the new draft, opted not to back the left-wing censure motion.
During the debate, Lecornu emphasized that “after over 350 hours of discussion, there were no credible alternatives” to the government’s proposed budget, highlighting the necessity of the plan for economic stability.
The budget will next be examined by the Senate on Thursday, before returning to the Assembly on Friday for final consideration. The passage of the expenditure section comes amid months of political uncertainty over the 2026 budget, which has triggered repeated motions of no confidence and heightened tensions within the governing coalition.
Lecornu, who assumed office last year, has repeatedly stressed that his top priority is maintaining political stability while advancing key economic reforms, including the comprehensive budget package.
