Syria, France leaders talk on preserving national unity, reconstruction

(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and French President Emmanuel Macron hold a phone call on Sunday to review recent developments in Syria, with both leaders highlighting the necessity of maintaining the country’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial cohesion, as stated by reports.

According to information released following the conversation, discussions center on the latest political and security shifts, with both sides expressing rejection of separatist paths and stressing the importance of protecting Syria’s territorial integrity.

The two presidents also underline the urgency of advancing Syria’s reconstruction after nearly 14 years of conflict, which came to an end in December 2024. They point to the need for creating suitable conditions to encourage economic recovery and development initiatives, amid increasing regional and international focus on rebuilding efforts.

The call takes place as Damascus works to strengthen state control following the declaration of a nationwide ceasefire and a full reintegration agreement with the SDF, developments that signal a major change in Syria’s internal landscape.

These steps follow a military campaign by the Syrian Army that resulted in the recapture of large areas in eastern and northeastern parts of the country, after repeated violations by the SDF of previous agreements reached with Damascus roughly a year earlier.

The government has stepped up nationwide security efforts since the removal of the Bashar al-Assad administration in December 2024, ending more than two decades of rule and marking a new phase in the country’s political trajectory.
