Baykar, Leonardo in new partnership deal
Cingolani described the partnership as a move toward producing “next generation unmanned systems” with production expected to begin soon. He emphasized a perceived gap in NATO and Europe regarding UAV capabilities and highlighted ongoing work on integrating payload systems. The companies aim to achieve a successful aircraft carrier landing with the Italian Navy by year-end.
The joint venture will operate production facilities at four sites in Italy, including Ronchi dei Legionari, and plans to complete certification of new drones by 2026. Cingolani noted a strong focus on the European market, which currently faces a significant drone shortage.
Reflecting on Leonardo’s decision to partner with Baykar, Cingolani praised Baykar’s advanced production capabilities and youthful workforce, citing their near self-sufficiency in core components and electronic sensing technologies.
